Exploring the past can transform young minds for a lifetime!

Alabama History Day is a year-long, interdisciplinary academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. By participating in AHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local level which progress to our state competition, traditionally held the last Friday in March.*  Winning competitors are eligible to move on to the National History Day competition held in Washington, D. C., each June!

Please visit www.AlabamaHumanities.org for more information.

*Competition will be held the first Friday in April when Good Friday conflicts with the March date.

Welcome Students!NHD2017.PrattvilleStudents.onUMCollegeParkcampus.jpg

The Alabama History Day staff invites you to get creative and demonstrate your critical thinking skills in our annual competition. The best thing about this competition is that YOU select the topic and the presentation format! We have a ton of guides and other resources to help you along the way whether you build a website, create an exhibit, write a paper, prepare a live performance, or film a documentary.

You may work solo or in groups of up to five students. Also, remember that groups can be made up of students in different grade levels, as long as you are in the same division. If group projects are your thing, start texting your friends and classmates, and get to work!

  • Junior Division – grades 6-8
  • Senior Division – grades 9-12

Please visit our Student Page for resources!

Welcome Educators!AHD2.jpg.jpg

Please check out our Educator Page!  Our job is to facilitate the rewarding experience of participating in the Alabama History Day Program.  We have started by creating a general walk-through for students that you, as a  teacher, may find helpful as well!

What are you waiting for?  If you are new to the program and need assistance getting started, please contact us!  All comments, questions, and suggestions are welcomed as we work to identify best practices for supporting educators and students participating in Alabama History Day.

Seeking History Lovers!

Students from all over The Great State Of Alabama in grades 6 through 12 will converge on the campus of

Auburn University at Montgomery

Friday,  April 6, 2018

to present their research in the annual

Alabama History Day Competition!

We are looking for Alabamians interested in celebrating these year-long projects. After months of diligent research and creative energy, winning students from the local level will meet at our state-wide event. You can help them further hone their skills by evaluating entries, interviewing contestants, and selecting winners to represent our state in the national competition.

While most judges work in the humanities (e.g., educators, librarians, museum professionals and artists) all volunteers interested in witnessing the impressive documentaries, exhibits, performances, research papers, and websites created by Alabama youth are encouraged to judge!
